College career fairs are just around the corner so I decided to focus on this topic on the podcast this week. I cannot stress enough how important it is to learn how to properly plan for and navigate the career fair. For many college students, this is where they’ll begin their interviewing journey for their dream job. My guest on the podcast, Dr. Calvin Williams, even goes as far as to say that career fair is the super bowl of your college career. Career fair can be extremely intimidating and stressful so I’m here to give you some advice.
The first thing that I recommend is to go to as many career fairs as you can starting freshman year. You may think that it would be a waste of time, but I promise you that it won’t be! The more times that you go, the more confident you will feel when it really matters! It’s also a great way to network and talk with recruiters so that by the time you’re getting ready to graduate they already know who you are.
My next piece of advice is to do your research! You should know exactly what companies will be at your career fair and you should have a list of your top 10-15 companies that you want to work for. Make sure that you know what positions these companies are hiring for so that you can tailor your resume and cover letter for your top choices. So many students approach the recruiters and ask them what they’re hiring for. Don’t be one of these people! Be prepared and let the recruiters know why you would be the best fit for the position.
I also recommend that you don’t approach your top companies first. You don’t want nerves to be the reason why you’re not considered for a position. Talk to a few companies that are not on your target list so that you can practice your elevator speech a few times and increase your confidence. This way by the time you talk to your top companies, you’ll be ready to blow them away.
These are just a few tips for conquering the career fair. For more on this topic, make sure you click the link below and listen to the podcast.
